Between 2000 and 2003 Nottingham has had a bad press. Nottingham was named in the media as the 'gun-crime capital of the UK', and has been nicknamed "Shottingham" in some quarters. In 2005 it allegedly had one of the worst criminal records in the country, with a whopping 115.5 crimes per 1000 people. In 2007 the BBC reported that the number of shootings in the City had fallen from 51 in 2003 to 13 in 2006.
But in January 2008 it was reported by the press the gun crime in Nottingham had risen for a second year running.
The incidence of many crimes in Nottingham is several times higher than the English average. A crime survey stated that Nottingham topped the crime rankings for police statistics on murders, burglaries, and vehicle crime Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire Police condemned the survey as inaccurate due to using out of date population figures.
In 2007 a property TV programme is said to have claimed Nottingham was the 4th worst city to live in saying Nottingham had "loads of good aspects but crime lets it down".
